1880s Indiana State Seal Foundry Printers Block C1796

8 x 8 pica ( 1 5/16 x 1 5/16 inches )

Although this early printer's type block depicts an Indiana State seal, versions of the seal have been in use since 1816. The elements are a woodsman, buffalo, sycamore trees, hills and a setting (or rising?) sun . Solid foundry cast alloy with electrotype copper face.

Foundry Marking: Foundry stamp on one end from MacKellar Smiths and Jordan Type Foundry, 1867 to 1892. Most likely much earlier than 1892, we have chosen to use the last date of manufacture by the M.S.and J. foundry.
